Exposed: Reasons Behind unending Fuel crisis in Nigeria

The lingering scarcity of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), otherwise called petrol, has persisted in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and other hinterland states despite the receded floodwater in Lokoja, the Kogi State capital, which was initially blamed for the scarcity.

The situation has lasted for more than 30 days in the country’s capital city, Abuja, and in some cities majorly in the North.

Although the federal government had attributed the scarcity to flooding, which cut off fuel transporters and other commuters on the Lokoja highway, indications have also emerged that there are other factors responsible for the lingering situation, reports Daily Trust.

Starting from the first week of October, commuters in Abuja got the indication of a looming petrol scarcity as various retail outlets gradually ran out of the product, while some that had it began an upward price adjustment.

Soon, black marketers resurfaced in the streets of Abuja, selling at N250 per litre initially before it rose to N350 at the prevailing rate. At the initial period, some marketers told Daily Trust on Sunday that there was a drop in loading at the depots, mostly located in Lagos and Warri in Delta State, among other coastal areas.

The troubles of fuel consumers worsened as they began to queue for hours to get the product. The fuel scarcity soon spread to more states in the hinterland.

The national vice president of the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN), Alhaji Abubakar Maigandi, said product supply from the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Ltd to the private depots was limited.

“There is a little scarcity in the depots where we are loading. They have even increased their rates. Now, they are selling for N170 to N175/litre instead of N148/litre,” he noted.

In spite of assurances from relevant authorities, the situation deteriorated in mid October with the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) formally confirming the petrol scarcity in Abuja and other states in the North, which it said was caused by the flooding in Lokoja.

In a statement, the NMDPRA noted, “Flood has submerged a greater part of the city and grounded all vehicular movements. This has affected the distribution of petroleum products to the Federal Capital Territory and environs.”

The agency said trucking via alternative routes was ongoing as part of measures to mitigate the situation. However, on its part, the NNPC Ltd said it had 30 day products’ sufficiency.

“The current queue situation in some parts of Abuja and its environs is as a result of delays in arrival of fuel trucks. This is happening as a result of heavy flooding that has submerged parts of the highway passing through Lokoja, Kogi State and also an incidence of a failed road section around Badegi-Agaie highway in Niger State.

“Consequently, vehicles, especially fuel tankers, are finding alternative roads to get to their intended destinations,” it stated.

As the water receded in Lokoja, access was gradually restored, but a massive gridlock began, with trucks spending nearly a day to cross a section of less than 500 meters at the Koton Karfe axis, near the Lokoja bridge. The fuel queue continued across Abuja and states with prices reaching over N250/l at retail stations.

Some tanker drivers also blamed the persistent gridlock in Lokoja.

“The situation has not ended, but more tankers are plying the route from Lagos. Tankers spend over eight hours to pass through Koton Karfe, where the river overflowed,” Musa Garba, a tanker driver said in mid-October

Interview: Popular and International Musician Ayo Balogun Wizkid Bear His Mind on Music, Culture, Politics

Afropop star Wizkid on ego, alter egos and elections: ‘I make a lot of club records but I feel like a pastor,

Yomi Adegoke

Wizkid: ‘My parents wanted me to be a lawyer or a doctor.’

His success has come in waves over a decade, but the Nigerian singer is closer than ever to household-name status. He talks about his upbringing, his struggles with fame – and his disillusionment with Nigerian politics

When I meet Wizkid at Metropolis recording studios in London, I am suddenly an awed 18-year-old again. The Afropop juggernaut soundtracked my university years, yet I’m struck by how youthful he appears, apparently having barely aged since I screamed myself hoarse watching him perform at London’s Hammersmith Apollo a decade ago

The only difference is that now, the 32-year-old Nigerian musician’s wrists are weighed down by Van Cleef bracelets and a diamond-encrusted watch. And his music is no longer the preserve of a smattering of fans across the diaspora. Wizkid, born Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun, is slouched in an office chair, zen but visibly sapped from a day of interviews, a new album release and recently welcoming a second child with his manager and partner, Jada Pollock. They met in 2012; he has four children altogether. “Now I’m more careful with what I put in my songs,” he says with a laugh. “Because my kids listen to my songs.”

To a degree. His new album, More Love, Less Ego, is a quintessentially border-crossing offering that marries melodic Afrobeats and lilting Caribbean sounds with babymaking R&B. Wizkid admits he has an unorthodox approach to music, recording every day and regularly scrapping entire albums if they don’t feel right. “That’s always my process,” he says, matter of factly. “Make one, scrap it. Make another one, scrap it. Until I find the right one.” It must be an intense exercise. “It is, man. But I have a lot to say.”

Nanny, Cook Remain in Police custody over Davido's son death

There are indications that the police might conduct an autopsy to determine whether Ifeanyi Adeleke, son of popular music artiste, Davido, and his fiancée, Chioma Rowland, died as a result of drowning in a swimming pool at his father’s residence in the Banana Island area of Lagos State.

According to a source, who confirmed the development, it was standard practice for the police to conduct an autopsy in such a case, adding, however, that the police would desist from the move if the deceased’s family members were against it.

Though the family members are not saying anything yet because they are still in shock but until anybody says stop, the standard procedure is to conduct an autopsy and we are going to follow that procedure just like in any case of death,” the source said.

The source also disclosed that out of the eight domestic workers interrogated by the police in connection with Ifeanyi’s death, the cook and nanny, whose jobs was to cater for the wellbeing of the three-year-old boy, had been detained for reasons including the failure to uphold the duty of care of the minor.

“It was the work of the nanny to take care of the child (Ifeanyi); the nanny was negligent or how could the boy have left the house without her knowledge?

“The boy left the house, walked to the back where the swimming pool is situated and fell into the swimming pool. Nobody noticed until much later. At that point in time, he had drowned and was at the bottom of the swimming pool.

“So, they brought him out and rushed him to the Lagoon Hospital, where the doctors tried unsuccessfully to revive him. They left the hospital and rushed the boy to Evercare Hospital, where he was declared dead.

They have deposited his corpse in the mortuary for an autopsy to reveal the cause of death. All the domestic workers at home when the incident happened have been questioned by the police but only the nanny and cook were detained,” the source added.

Confirming the detention of the two domestic workers, the spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, when contacted, said, “I spoke with the DPO and he said the nanny and the cook have been detained. Other domestic workers brought in for questioning were involved released.”

Also a closed circuit television (CCTV) which should be installed in such a high brow residence, can shed more light on the probable cause of his death.

The news of the death of three year-old, Ifeanyi Adeleke has thrown the family into mourning since Monday when the boy was said to have drowned and also attracted tributes from important personalities, celebrities and the public who sent messages on their social media handles.

Nationwide Protests Looming

Activists and revolutionists have announced plans to hold a nationwide protest on October 1 – Independence Day – in Nigeria.

The protest is necessitated by nine demands, according to a statement by the Coalition for Revolution issued on Wednesday.

The statement, signed by CORE’s Co-convener, Baba Aye, and Co-convener, Gbenga Komolafe, was titled, ‘Poverty, insecurity, police brutality: CORE organises actions for October’.

Among their demands is the recognition of those who died during the #EndSARS protests as national heroes, with a national apology.

They complained that the regime of Maj-Gen Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) has taken “the incompetence, corruption, and repressive tendencies of the country’s ruling class to the height of infamy”.

They also lamented that tens of thousands of workers have been sacked while many more have suffered salary cuts.

“Farmers cannot access seedlings and other agricultural inputs. Traders and other informal economy workers have no access to credit.

Lukaku VS Ibramohvic

AC Milan striker, Zlatan Ibrahimovic has responded to allegations he used racist language on Romelu Lukaku during Tuesday night's derby clash between AC Milan and Inter Milan.

Recall both players almost came to blows and had to be restrained by players and staff during the match. Read HERE

During the clash Ibrahimovic was heard yelling at Lukaku: 'Go do your voodoo s***, you little donkey.'

"In Zlatan

And while many interpreted that as a racist slur, Ibrahimovic has now come out to state that he isn't racist.

'In ZLATAN's world there is no place for RACISM,' he tweeted. 'We are all the same race - we are all equal!!'

However, the Swede could not resist a jibe to who is the king of Milan, adding: 'We are all PLAYERS some better than others.'

"In Zlatan

Former teammate, Paul Pogba, also waded in, saying Zlatan loves him too much and can never be racist.

Back in February 2020, Inter fought back from 2-0 down to claim bragging rights in the derby with a 4-2 win. Lukaku sealed the win in the 93rd minute and later declared: 'There's a new king in town,' in a clear dig at Zlatan.

Ibrahimovic waited patiently till October 2020 by scoring twice in Milan's 2-1 win over Inter, after which he posted on Instagram: 'Milan never had a king, they have a God.'

AC Milan representatives have insisted the 39-year-old's 'voodoo' dig was a reference to Lukaku turning down a new deal at Everton, with majority shareholder Farhad Moshiri saying at the time that Lukaku visited a witch doctor in Africa and consequently rejected an extension of his deal at Everton due to a 'voodoo message' from the witch doctor.

The witch doctor reportedly told Lukaku not to sign a new deal with Everton but to go back to Chelsea despite the fact that Everton gave him a better contract.

Buhari vs Atiku: Nigerians react as ex-VP reveals father is from Sokoto

Nigerians have reacted to recent revelation by Atiku Abubakar, the Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, on his true nationality.

Atiku had on Sunday in his response to the All Progressives Congress, APC, petition before the Presidential election tribunal said he was born in Jada in 1946, in present day Adamawa state, but then part of Northern Cameroon by Nigerian parents and therefore “a citizen of Nigeria by birth.”

father, Garba Atiku Abdulkadir was a Nigerian by birth who hailed from Wurmo in present day Sokoto State.

He further revealed that his mother, Aisha Kande was also a Nigerian who hailed from Dutse in present day Jigawa State.
This has since stirred reactions on social media.
Some Nigerians are of the opinion that Atiku would have to present birth certificates of his parents as proof at the Tribunal.

35 Senators Backed Ndume for Senate President

Abuja – There are strong indications that no fewer than 35 senators from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), are backing former Senate Leader, Ali Ndume, to clinch the seat of the President of the Senate in the 9th National Assembly.

It was gathered that the lawmakers are angry with the leadership of the party over its decision to impose Senate Leader, Ahmed Lawan without recourse to them.

The lawmakers, who pleaded anonymity expressed disappointment at Lawan over an alleged statement credited to him that all the APC State governors have donated their Senators to him to ensure his victory.

The Senators-elect said: “We are not happy over claims by Lawan that APC governors have donated their Senators-elect to him in order to realise his Senate Presidency.

“Even they have gone ahead to share the juicy committees to Senators-elect that are favourable to the imposition.”

The lawmakers said they disliked attempts to intimidate and harass some of them by using the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC), adding that they have uncovered plans by the party to plant spies in the gallery of the chamber to monitor the elections.

The lawmakers rooting for Ndume are mostly drawn from the incoming senators and a few former governors who feel slighted by the bullying tendencies of the party National Chairman, Adam Oshiomhole.

A few of the lawmakers who spoke to our correspondent on the sideline of their induction exercise holding at the Transcorps Hilton in Abuja asked the party to retrace its steps to avoid the pitfall of 2015 when it lost the seat of Deputy Senate Presidency to the main opposition.

This was as some lawmakers in opposition PDP like the former governor of Benue State, Gabriel Suswam, who already perceive Lawan as a symbol of the ruling APC and a willing tool for the executive give hint that APC might be in for another shocker.

-a tight chest – which may feel like a band is tightening around it
-coughing

The severity of the symptoms varies from person to person. They usually come and go, but for some people they’re more persistent.
Asthma symptoms can sometimes get temporarily worse. This is known as an asthma attack.

When to get medical advice
Several conditions can cause similar Early symptoms of Asthma, such as a chest infection or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), so it’s important to get a proper diagnosis and correct treatment.

Your doctor will usually be able to diagnose asthma by asking about your or your child’s symptoms and carrying out some simple breathing tests.
But these are often difficult to do in infants and young children, so the diagnosis may be made on the basis of symptoms and response to a trial of treatment with an inhaler.

Causes of asthma
Asthma is caused by inflammation (swelling) of the breathing tubes that carry air in and out of the lungs.
This inflammation makes the breathing tubes highly sensitive, so they temporarily become narrow. This may occur randomly, or after exposure to a trigger. The tubes may also sometimes become clogged with sticky mucus.

Common asthma triggers include:
-allergens, such as house dust mites, animal fur and pollens
-other irritants, such as cigarette smoke, strong smells, gases and
-cold air
-exercise (including marathon sex)
-chest infections

The reason why some people develop asthma isn’t fully understood, although it’s known that you’re more likely to develop it if you have a close relative with the condition.

Treatments for asthma
While there’s currently no cure for asthma, there are a number of treatments that can help control the condition.
Most asthma treatments are taken using an inhaler, a small device that delivers a spray or powder medicine to your breathing tubes as you breathe in.

The main treatments are:
-identifying and avoiding asthma triggers if possible
-reliever inhalers – inhalers used when needed to quickly relieve asthma symptoms for a short time
-preventer inhalers – inhalers used regularly every day to reduce the inflammation in the breathing tubes, which prevents asthma symptoms occurring

You’ll usually draw up a personal action plan with your doctor or asthma nurse. This will include information about your medicines, how to monitor your condition and what to do if you have an asthma attack.

How long does asthma last?
Asthma is a long-term condition for many people – particularly if it first develops in adulthood.

In children, it sometimes disappears or improves during the teenage years, although it can return later in life.

The symptoms can usually be controlled with treatment and most people will have normal and active lives, although some people with more severe asthma may have persistent problems.

Complications of asthma
Although asthma can normally be kept under control, it’s still a serious condition that can cause a number of complications.

This is why it’s so important to follow your treatment plan and not ignore your symptoms if they’re getting worse.

Badly controlled asthma can cause issues such as:
-persistent tiredness
-underperformance or absence from work or school
-psychological problems – including stress, anxiety and depression
-disruption of your work and leisure because of unexpected visits to your doctor or hospital
-lung infections (pneumonia)
-in children, delays in growth or puberty
-There’s also a risk of life-threatening complications, such as severe asthma attacks.
